The Atlantic Council for International Cooperation is looking for a responsible, experienced person to fill the position of Youth Engagement Intern.

The youth engagement intern will be part of a team working on the Kaleidoscope Video Challenge project and will also work on planning and delivering youth engagement activities during International Development Week (February 7th - 13th).

Project Background:
The Kaleidoscope Youth Video Challenge aims to showcase young Canadians who are active global citizens, and profile their stories to encourage the broader public to become involved in global issues.
Kaleidoscope will draw out the perspectives, realities and visions of youth across the diverse regions of Canada.

Kaleidoscope aims to profile and support young Canadians (under 18) who are engaged as active global citizens. The Kaleidoscope project invites youth participants to prepare and submit short videos that address the questions, 'What actions are you taking on global issues?'
and 'Why do you think that active global citizenship is important?'
Submissions will be judged on the thoughtfulness of the participants'
responses and on the creativity of their videos. Workshops on video production will be offered to encourage youth with less experience and access to video equipment to participate.

Kaleidoscope is framed around the eight Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs) and the crosscutting theme of environmental sustainability.
Participants are encouraged to submit videos that link their actions and motives to the areas of focus and the MDGs and environmental sustainability.

International Development Week (IDW) occurs annually in the first week
of February. IDW is a chance for Canadians to:

Recognize the work of fellow Canadians that are helping improve economic, social, and health conditions of those living in poverty around the world; Educate themselves about life in developing countries and; Discover ways to become actively involved as a global citizens in international development Tasks & Responsibilities:
In collaboration with a staff team, the intern will be responsible for:

Promoting the Kaleidoscope Video Challenge Project in the Atlantic Region Planning and delivering youth engagement activities in the Atlantic Region during International development week Implementing an outreach strategy, which includes developing relationships with educational institutions, community-based organizations and other groups that work with youth.
Creating, facilitating, and producing presentations for schools, community organizations, and other partner groups Assisting with creating, facilitating, and producing video production workshops for youth Assisting with organizing events Other duties as required.
Desired Experience, Skills and Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have:

Undergraduate degree or diploma in international development studies, environmental studies, public relations or education; Excellent interpersonal skills with experience creating promotional materials and/or event planning Solid oral and written communication skills in English with basic French an asset; Excellent planning and organizational skills; Previous experience working with youth; Experience with developing educational and communications programs and materials; Strong facilitation skills; Experience developing capacity building workshops and materials; Ability to demonstrate a high-degree of motivation, and persistence and to work independently and in team settings; Time management skills.

BookCamp Halifax is a user-generated unconference designed to bring print publishers, educators, community builders, and the tech community together – for free! BookCamp Halifax is an opportunity to explore the present and future of books and book-like technologies. It’s open to anyone interested in the publishing industry and the potential dynamics of the reader/creator/publisher relationship.

Join us for a day of sharing new ideas, radical notions and engaging conversation! We’ll consider the future of the book as an object; examine its ongoing role as a delivery mechanism for stories, information and entertainment; and examine how publishers can leverage themselves for success in the digital age.

Participants and self-selected guest speakers will choose the agenda for this day-long event, which will be comprised of twenty forty-five minute sessions spread over five time-slots. Hello everyone,
I'm writing to all public relations students today to share some exciting news. The former department of public relations has been re-named the Department of Communication Studies. This change reflects the evolution of our department which now offers a broad range of programs including the BPR, the masters programs, a new Minor in Communication Studies and a new interdisciplinary BSc (Science Communication).

The department name change does not affect the name of the degree Bachelor of Public Relations. If you are a BPR student, you are still working on a Bachelor of Public Relations and your diploma at graduation will indicate that the degree earned is a Bachelor of Public Relations. The change is that your degree is housed in the Department of Communication Studies, along with some newly developed programs.

This evolution in our department is a result of several years of strategic planning and development. Our goal has been to create a department that offers programs which build on our expertise in public relations but also reflect a broader definition of communication. This is important to students, faculty and employers as we ensure that our learning environment keeps pace with a dynamic and complex global landscape.

Have a portfolio put together for work term interviews? Why not use it to win money and prizes!

IABC Maritime Canada is hosting a portfolio competition for students at Mount Saint Vincent University next Thursday, February 11. This is a great opportunity to have experienced communicators provide feedback on your portfolio. And best of all, entry is free!

The student with the winning portfolio will receive an $100 prize as well as a one-year student membership to IABC. Each participant will also receive a certificate of participation that can be added to their portfolios.

The portfolio competition will take place in Seton 526 next Thursday, February 11. Participants will sign up for 10 minute presentation slots between 5 and 7 PM. Participants have those 10 minutes to explain the layout and design of their portfolios to the judges. Portfolios will be judged on content, creativity, presentation, consistency, organization of material, and overall appearance.

The Arthritis Society is Canada’s principle health charity which empowers the nearly 4.5 million Canadians with arthritis to live their lives to the fullest by combating the daily limitations of arthritis. Over the last 60 years, The Society has invested $165 million towards arthritis research to develop better treatments and ultimately find a cure.

The Arthritis Society is seeking an experienced Communications Coordinator to coordinate Atlantic Region Divisions’ communication activities and initiatives, and working in support of the programs and services, and revenue development teams in both Divisions.

Reporting to the Executive Director, Atlantic Region, the Communications Coordinator is the key individual responsible for raising the awareness and profile of the Division in support of its mission, and for researching, planning and initiating external relations activities for the Divisions.

Key parts of this role will be to provide advice and support to regional staff in the areas of media and public relations, lead proactive external relations activities, and create verbal and written content for several publications, including but not limited to, our print newsletter, month e-newsletter, stewardship, promotional and informational materials.
The successful candidate will use solid judgment and knowledge to further the organization’s revenue development.

Major duties and responsibilities:
Develops and produces TAS publications in accordance with the strategic communication plan, develops production schedules and editorial assignments
Acts as initial contact for media inquiries, coaches and assists staff as required to respond to media requests.
Oversees and monitors the TAS brand image both internally and externally to ensure consistency to National and local protocols.
Develop internal and external plans for a Communications plan, including TAS Awareness campaigns, with criteria for measuring outcomes.
Conduct periodic evaluations of TAS publications to ensure they meet the organization’s goals.
Develops and coordinates placement of print ads.
Assists with media relations, develops and distributes PSA’s, press releases, advisories etc.
Coordinates the publication of TAS print materials including liaising with printers.

Participates as member of the National Communications staff team and disseminates Information as needed to other staff.

Qualifications:
Post-secondary education in a relevant discipline.
Proven successful experience (minimum 3 years) in communications, preferably in the health charity sector
Demonstrated success in media/public relations.
Knowledge of the spectrum of communication methods.
Excellent communication (written and oral) and presentation skills.
High-level computer skills, including adobe creative suite.
Knowledge and experience in advocacy initiatives
Exceptional interpersonal skills.

INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP AWARD
First presented in 2001, this award recognizes MSVU faculty or a group of faculty (full or part-time) who demonstrate a commitment to the improvement of university teaching or learning, within the institution or beyond.

The individual or group of individuals nominated for the award will have provided leadership among faculty colleagues by developing institutional structures and processes and pursuing activities that help create an environment in which teaching excellence is valued and fostered. I am in the final stages of site development for www.chickbliss.com and am in the process of launching my marketing plan.

I am looking for some help - perhaps some students from the public relations program to create some exciting press releases as well as plan a launch party and contact media and build "buzz".

Basically the site is about helping women express to their partners (and themselves) what they really want in their relationships. Especially the little things that are hard to say but mean a lot. (Main product: A personalized instruction manual created quickly online by answering ~40 questions and then a book is created to either download or have published and sent to you.)

A few months ago, fellow Mount alum Andre Mazerolle (who I have still not met in person, sadly!) set me up to discuss my Social Capital Value Add idea with his friend Steven Rayson, Chartered Business Valuator & Certified Fraud Examiner at Deloitte Canada.

esse arts + opinions magazine presents the eighth edition of its
critical writing competition. All young and emerging writers are

The Contest
Your contribution can be an art-related essay, or can be a critical
review of an exhibition, performance, or site-specific intervention,
and should conform to the magazine's general mandate. Articles are to

caused in the US, yet not many realize that Canada also had segregated
schools, by law and by geography?with one in Nova Scotia that didn't close
its doors until 1983. The Little Black School House unearths the story of
the women, men, and children who studied and taught at Canada's racially
segregated schools.

Compelling personal stories illustrate that many of the students who
attended Canada's all-Black schools look back on the experience with
conflicting feelings: fondness for the dedication of their Black teachers,
and outrage at being denied equal access to education, a right fundamental
to democracy in Canada. With a vibrant musical score composed by jazz
legend, Joe Sealy, this poignant documentary is an unfailingly honest

Responsibilities:

•Write brochures, newsletters, annual reports, fact sheets, etc
•Assist with all media relations activities, including handling routine inquiries, and media clippings and analysis.

Qualifications:
Degree, Certificate or Diploma in Communications/Public Relations;
Minimum two years job-related experience in communications;
Strong planning, project management, research and technical skills;
Demonstrated interpersonal and problem solving skills;
Demonstrated verbal and written communications skills;
Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines when faced with multiple requests for action from a variety of sources;
Knowledge of event based media and communications an asset;

Accountability

Results from the 2005 Annual Survey of Advertising and Related Services will be released on Tuesday, March 27, 2007 in the Statistics Canada Daily. The Daily can be downloaded at no charge from the Statistics Canada website (www.statcan.ca).

This survey covers establishments classified as Advertising and Related Services (5418) according to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) during the reference year.

It comprises establishments primarily engaged in:
*creating mass-media advertising or public relation campaigns;
*placing advertising in media for advertisers or advertising agencies;
*selling media time or space to advertisers or advertising agencies for media owners;
*creating and implementing indoor or outdoor display advertising campaigns;
*creating and implementing direct mail advertising campaigns;
*delivering (except by mail) advertising materials or samples;
*creating and implementing specialty advertising campaigns;
*providing related services, such as sign painting and lettering, welcoming services and window trimming services.

This industry does not include advertising sales by newspapers, magazines, radio, television or internet, which accounts for the majority of the difference between results of this survey and calculations of total advertising spending in the Canadian economy.
