Volunteer Opportunity
Here is an overview of the two projects I am interested in getting assistance with. One is the palliative care unit promotion or marketing package as well as for the Sunshine Room Brochure. See details below:
1. Palliative Care Unit
Palliative Care is a special kind of health care for individuals and families who are living with or dying from a life threatening illness, or who are bereaved. It provides physical, emotional, social and spiritual support for individuals as well as family and friends.
2. SSR
THE SUNSHINE ROOM
- Making a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families -
Being diagnosed with cancer can be one of the most difficult things a person will ever face. Patients and their loved ones experience a wide range of emotions during their cancer journey and there can be tremendous need for support throughout this very challenging time.
A patient who knew first-hand the value of a strong support system believed that cancer patients deserved to be surrounded by the same kind of compassion and caring she was receiving from her family, friends and community. Her vision led to the creation of the Sunshine Room, an oasis for patients and their families, providing a warm and supportive environment for those affected by cancer.
The Sunshine Room is staffed entirely by trained volunteers, many of whom have had personal experience with cancer. A group of more than seventy men and women give freely of their time and talents to help patients and family members feel better supported and thus better able to cope with their journey.
Hospitality volunteers welcome patients and families, assist with head wraps and chat about services. Patients can sit and relax, read, get fitted for a free head wrap or wig and enjoy complementary therapies including Massage, Reflexology, Reiki and Therapeutic Touch. All services in the Sunshine Room are provided free of charge. Professional volunteer therapists offer a hands-on introduction of their services. All therapies are performed in an adjoining treatment room to ensure privacy and comfort. The 20 minutes spent with each patient or family member focuses on reducing stress and evoking a sense of peace and calm.
In June 2008, the Sunshine Room celebrated its 5th birthday. The room began because of the compassion and perseverance of an incredible woman who became a champion for cancer patients - it continues to thrive because of the many volunteers who believe in it as much as she did. Our volunteers often say they feel blessed to be able to spend time with cancer patients and their families – they experience a deep sense of satisfaction in helping others to feel better able to cope at a very difficult time in their lives.
